I had a friend call me today, her friend is looking for a new sedan. I have nothing to go on other than “something like an Accord”. They know nothing, and want a boring ass Sedan.
So, older Accord/Camry? Newer Sonata/Optima? Chrysler 200c? Fusion? Altima? Or go near-lux like an MKS, Genesis, or Lacrosse?
I have my own bias against the Camcord because I believe there is greater value in the challengers. But I worry my bias clouds my judgement. If you had $10k for a mainstream Sedan, what route would you take?

Optimas might be in that range now. Mine has been relentlessly average in every way, and that sounds like just what they’re looking for.
EDIT: took a quick look on cars.com and found 2 in my area with under 90k miles for under $9k. Not bad.

I think at that price point the Fusion is great. It’s probably what I’d go for. Or if I am not a high mileage driver I may opt for a used MKZ with a few more miles than a Fusion at the same price. Even people that want boring sedans may appreciate leather, heated/cooled seats and a few other amenities.
Or alternatively get a mint Panther platform car. :P

Economical: Prius/Corolla
Mid:Camry
Bit softer and more comfortable: Avalon
Sportier Sedan: IS/GS
Luxury sedan:LS/GS

In the used markets accords run barely less than a TL so 07-08 auto with ~75k is doable.
Since they obviously won’t do that though, id say I like the fusion the most. The accord holds its value well so you’d have to go a little older vs a fusion but I think the long term reliability may make the Honda worth it.

I’d get an older/high mileage luxury car like a Lexus or one of the germans. They still hold up even when they are older. Just make sure it’s one that’s been well taken care of.

Lexus something or other?
I would go for one of these brands. They’re based on the camcords of the world but are at least plush and have heated seats. So they’re not bad places to be for a while.

Honestly probably an Accord. Maybe a Sonata or Optima, they really have become a incredible bargains and the Accord doesn’t offer you much more if you don’t care about driving dynamics. The 200c is a steaming pile of rubbish(yes it’s cheap, there is a good reason it’s cheap), I can’t get past the Altima’s styling(bleh), MKS is near-lux in name only and I know nothing about the Genesis or Lacrosse.
I’ve spent a good amount of time in the previous-gen Fusion and I think the Accord is really worth the premium just based on fit and finish although I have never even been in a current-gen Fusion.

Find them such a great deal on a hatch/wagon that they can’t pass it up. They buy it at your recommendation, fall in love, and boom! You never have to find them a beigemobile again.

12+ Camry SE or XLE can be had in that range. Boring, but the interior is a nice place to be. Hyundai and Kia are nice and might be had with lower miles for that price but they feel cheap. Nissan Altima could be a contender but its CVT is terrible. I’m speaking this into my phone sitting in Charlotte gridlock traffic in a Versa with a version of it. It’s hateful. It’s like a 98 Sentra with a bad torque converter.
08-12 Malibu are also very good. A v6 LTZ can be had under 70k miles for that. 13-16 aren’t as good and they’re awkward and ugly. Early-Beak TL or TSX fall in that price range too.
If your friend isn’t afraid of mileage an 08-12 Lexus ES or Infiniti G or M sedan may work too

For me, if I needed something boring, and not an Accord, it’d be a Sonata, Optima or Altima. I hate the seats in most Fords, the Camry is kinda crappy, the 200 is definitely crappy, and the previous-generation Malibu has an undersized back seat.
If they wanted something bigger then I’d be more looking at stuff like Hyundai Azera, Kia Cadenza, LaCrosse, or Avalon.

How does Oppo feel about the Kia Optima? They’re in great abundance and cheap as hell. I have no experience with them, but I’m curious to know how they’re holding up.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with an Accord/Camry. However, you’ll probably find more value in used Korean cars since depreciation is a bitch for these cars on the used market. In my area, (converting 10k USD to CAD, which is just under $13,000) there are 2013 Optima LX selling at or below that price, along with higher trim level 2012s (EX trims) at similar prices. If you’re lucky you might even see 2012 Genesis sedans (probably with the 3.8 V6).

I agree with a lot of what others have said. As far as “something like an Accord” the Kia/Hyundai line seems like a good place to look. You can generally find them with more equipment or lower miles than an Accord of the same age at the same price.

As someone looking in the mainstream sedan category for 5k for a friend of mine, this has my interest.
Almost everything good at 10 grand can be had 3 years older for 5.
For 10k id like to say jaguar xf, but would more likely say lexus something.
